He nodded, "Not much of it, but now that I can take the time to think, some things are a little less hazy now. Unfortunately, its still not too reliable. I can't even remember what the man sounded like, let alone looked like." He was silent for a few moments, slowing down a bit, his eyes staring at the grass in thought, "...Actually...I remember him being rather short, for a human at least. I remember he didn't look like much of a threat, probably why I figured he was telling the truth about needing someone to protect him. He seemed to have the air of a merchant about him."

"A merchant, huh?" she said off-handedly. The sun turned the air around them to a shimmering golden haze. The grass looked sunburned, spread to the horizon before them."I wonder why he was going," she murmured idly. Witherheart poked his head around her hair and squeaked, his nose twitching in the open air. "The next river's a way off still, that way," she pointed straight out on the horizon. "We should get to the banks in time for supper and a night's sleep."

Sighed a bit, "A night's sleep sounds perfect. Supper sounds even better." his pace livened up just at the thought of decent rest. He thought for a few moments before speaking up, "So, what will we be having for supper? I'm afraid my little pack of dried seeds won't be enough for the three of us." He laughed slightly, his eyes scanned the horizon, not having noticed any outstanding examples of wildlife yet.

Aijari snorted and skipped forward, spreading her arms wide. "What, you don't see anything you can eat out here?" Laughing derisively, she spun around with her face to the sun and her tiny companion squeaking frantically. "There's plenty out here! Just...." She stopped her free movement and returned to walking only slightly in front of Diego. Her face recomposed and her voice returned to flat logic. "Just squirrels and rabbits and small rodents. Birds if you feel like shooting them. But they don't really provide enough food for more than Witherheart." She tapped him on the nose and resettled him under her hair. She glanced at Diego and quickly flashed white teeth. "Don't worry. I don't travel without food when I leave home. I've got some meat we can cook up," she said, tapping a large leather pouch strung on the back of her thick leather belt that rested on her rump. "Have ourselves a nice feast."

Diego's smile grew, "Sounds much better then what I've had the past couple of days. " He took another quick glance around, spotting something out of the corner of his eye, "I wouldn't be much good at tracking down small game without some equipment. The most I could do with what I've got is make sub par traps that hardly work well." He turned his head to see what it was that caught his attention, and when it had gone before being identified, he shrugged it off and continued, "I'd be even less useful if I had to chase something down."

"Best not to say such things out loud," she said almost under her breath. Witherheart squirmed, putting a sharp-clawed paw in her ear. "Ouch! Get out," she muttered, swatting at him and casually tugging a slim dagger from between her shoulder blades. She did no more than that, tossing the knife lightly from her fingers and catching it again as it rotated in the air. "Acknowledging any weakness in places like this can be dangerous. We're not the only ones out here. Seems to me, even when there aren't people, per say, listening, the animals seem to get it in their heads that they're better than you, that they can take you, when you say stuff like that." She had noticed the movement as well, but preferred not to act until it proved to be a problem. She kept walking, her ears pricked for movement or danger. "And even if you're not much use, that's why I'm with you. Think of me as you for that merchant. I'm getting you to town. No matter what."

He smirked, giving a slight nod to her comment, "Well, kindest intentions I've heard in sometime now. You and I seem to hold common ground when it comes to matters of protection." His eyes scanned the near area, his thoughts at first focused on what might be hiding in the grass from earlier, then shifting to other things, "It may not seem like it, given what happened to me, but I am able to hold my ground pretty well, even now. So if a rather dangerous rabbit comes out to dispose of us, I'm sure I will be able to aid in its defeat." He smirked and continued after a moment, "Besides, I'd rather you know if I am not in top condition, that way you're not surprised if by some faint chance something were to happen."

She laughed. "I don't doubt it," she said, tapping the dagger on her thigh. "After all, you've got good steel back on your person. I should hope you could take care of a killer rabbit."

Diego laughed as well, "Of course, only adding to the possible feast." He looked to the sky, noticing that its decent was close to half completion, "Hm, I should hope we still have light before all is said and done." He eyes shifted to stare in the direction of their destination, "The quicker i'm there, the quicker I can make sure..." He thought to himself, before turning his attention to the dagger sheathed in place on his shoulder. He took it out gently, and examined its blade, "This isn't bad. Seems like it would do its job. I have definitely seen worse weapons out there. Doesn't mean this couldn't use a good bit of love, care, and honing."

"What are you saying?" she asked almost indignantly. "I don't keep care of my steel? Keep it any sharper and they cut my shins. If you'd like it sharper while you borrow it, I've got a whetstone in my stuff if you'd like. You probably got the one I've been using to..." Her pause was just barely perceptible. "Saw through ropes."

He smiled, sensing a bit of offense in her words, and shook his head, "As I said, I've seen far worse steel than that which you handed me." He continued to look at the dagger, inspecting its edge above anything else, "This has upkeep written all over it, but an edge will start to wear after use. That's the nature of these things." His words seemed reflective and pensive, his manner having changed some as he looked at the weapon, his eyes giving off a particular sense of knowledge and fascination. He sheathed the weapon after a few more moments, glancing over at Aijari, "Rather organized, keeping a blade to cut rope. I suppose it would be wise to keep around such a blade, keeping your defensive blade sharp to ward of any problems presented by a dull blade." He offered a friendly smile with his words, before turning his attention back to the direction of their travel, "As for sharpening, I'll let you handle that when I return it. I am not particularly fond of ruining borrowed steel."

She watched him curiously as he remarked on her blade, containing the hot feeling that flushed inside her as he mentioned the reasoning behind keeping a blade specifically for rope-cutting. Looking closely at the dagger before he sheathed it, she recognized it as one of the ones she used more often in her forays. It cut rope, sure, but it also cut leather. She didn't remember having sharpened it after its last use and flushed slightly at the remembrance of neglected upkeep. She hadn't expected to be meeting anyone during this trip into the quiet places beyond the city and hadn't given a thought to her usual maintenance. "I can give you a different one if you'd prefer a sharper edge. I didn't realize which I'd given you until just now," she said with affected lightness that she hoped covered any feelings other than politeness.

Thought about it for a moment and spoke, "I'll hold on to this one, I really have no preference either way, at least at this moment. Just the comfort of having something to defend myself with should the situation call for it is enough. Besides, the blade seems fine enough to cut a few more ropes." he laughed slightly, his eyes still focused ahead, the sun's light coming from such an angle that he had to squint slightly, "Just for my curiosity, about how far are we from the next river?"

Aijari shielded her eyes for a moment, looked toward the sun, sky, and the horizon. She knew that after the horizon, the ground fell away more sharply down to the river's swift-running edge. "Not far. Just on that horizon. If we go much farther after that we'd be sleeping in the river, drifting quickly down to the river-split. Most likely be dashed on the rocks. We'll start seeing some trees as we get on that we can collect wood from. Then the trade bridge a little farther north, walk along till we get to Wing-Over-Sea. I think we've made good enough time to get there tomorrow, actually." She flashed a quick smile to him.

He let out a comforted sigh, "That would be my hope. The sooner the better. Not that I mind the outdoors, but I'd like to travel without being tricked and stolen from." He returned her smile with one of his own, before looking to the horizon that promised a meal and decent rest, "If you don't mind my asking, what's on the meat menu?" he asked with a laugh.
